India Utter pardesh Etawah: Police have arrested the man accused of
raping and setting on fire a college student he knew in Uttar
Pradesh's Etawah district. The 21-year-old student suffered severe
burn injuries and is battling for life in a hospital.
According to the police, the accused, Farmaan, had invited the
21-year-old girl to his home on Tuesday night, where he allegedly
raped her. When she resisted, he allegedly poured kerosene on her and
set her ablaze.
The girl's siblings say that she was in love with the accused. "He
called her; she went because she trusted him... She came back running
and was on fire," the student's sister said.
The girl, in her statement, had named the accused. The police has also
registered a case against Farmaan's relatives.
The incident is one among a string of rape cases reported in the state
in the last few days in which the police had come under fire for
delayed action and negligence. While today's arrest came three days
after the brutal attack, police are yet to nab the culprits in the
other cases.
