Berlusconi Faces Verdict in Sex-for-Hire Trial

Posted on 8:15 AM by Unknown

Berlusconi Faces Verdict in Sex-for-Hire Trial
A Milan court was considering Silvio Berlusconi's fate in his
sex-for-hire trial Monday, with the former Italian premier risking an
end to his two-decade political career and a prison term if found
guilty.

Berlusconi, 76, is charged with paying an underage Moroccan teen for
sex and then trying to cover it up with phone calls to Milan police
officials when she was picked up for alleged theft. Berlusconi and the
woman deny having had sex with each other.

Prosecutors are seeking a six-year jail term and a lifetime ban from
politics for Berlusconi. Even if he is convicted, there are two more
levels of appeal before the sentence would become final. The process
can take months.

Berlusconi holds no official post in the current Italian government,
but remains influential in the uneasy cross-party coalition that
emerged after inconclusive February elections.
The charges against the billionaire media mogul stem from his infamous
"bunga bunga" parties in 2010 at his mansion near Milan, where he
wined and dined beautiful young women while he was premier. He says
the dinner parties were elegant soirees; prosecutors say they were
sex-fueled parties that women were paid to attend.
Neither Berlusconi nor the woman at the center of the case, Karima
el-Mahroug, better known by her nickname Ruby, have testified in this
trial. El-Mahroug was called by the defense but failed to show on a
couple of occasions, delaying the trial. Berlusconi's team eventually
dropped her from the witness list.

El-Mahroug did testify in the separate trial of three Berlusconi aides
charged with procuring prostitutes for the parties. She told that
court that Berlusconi's disco featured aspiring showgirls dressed as
sexy nuns and nurses performing striptease acts, and that one woman
even dressed up as President Barack Obama.

Berlusconi was not in court on Monday as the three female judges began
deliberating his fate at 9:45 a.m. Outside the courthouse a few people
held signs supporting prosecutors, including one reading: "Justice,
Legality and Dignity." A pair of Berlusconi supporters was also there.

Asked if Berlusconi was optimistic, defense attorney Piero Longo said
outside the courthouse that he was a "realist." Longo turned sarcastic
when asked if the Milan courts were biased against his client: "No,
Berlusconi has always been treated with great kindness and care in
Milan. Having a trial in Milan for Berlusconi is a privilege."

Berlusconi frequently has railed against Milan prosecutors and judges,
accusing them of mounting politically motivated cases against him.

El-Mahroug, now 20, said in the other trial that she attended about a
half-dozen parties at Berlusconi's villa, and that after each,
Berlusconi handed her an envelope with up to 3,000 euros ($3,900). She
said she later received 30,000 euros cash from the then-premier paid
through an intermediary — money that she told Berlusconi she wanted to
use to open a beauty salon, despite having no formal training.

She was 17 at the time of the alleged encounters but passed herself
off as being 24. She also claimed she was related to then-Egyptian
President Hosni Mubarak. Berlusconi's lawyers argued that he —
thinking el-Mahroug was indeed Mubarak's niece — called police after
she was detained in a bid to avoid a diplomatic incident.
El-Mahroug denied that Berlusconi had ever given her 5 million euros
($6.43 million). She said she told acquaintances and even her father
that she was going to receive such a large sum "as a boast," but that
it was a lie to make her seem more important.

The verdict garnered intense international media attention with half a
dozen TV satellite trucks taking positions outside the courthouse. The
verdict comes on the heels of Berlusconi's tax-fraud conviction, which
along with a four-year prison sentence and five-year ban on public
office, have been upheld on a first appeal.
The tax-fraud case is heading to Italy's highest court for a final
appeal after Berlusconi's defense failed to derail it last week at the
constitutional court.

Berlusconi, who has been tried numerous times relating to his business
dealings, has been convicted in other cases at the trial level. But
those convictions have always either been overturned on appeal or the
statute of limitations ran out before Italy's high court could have
its say.

The sex-for-hire case is the first involving his personal conduct.

Pervez Musharraf should be tried for treason, says Pakistan's prime minister

Posted on 8:10 AM by Unknown

Pervez Musharraf should be tried for treason, says Pakistan's prime minister
The former military dictator Pervez Musharraf should be tried for high
treason, Pakistan's prime minister said, raising the prospect of a
serious clash between the country's civilian and military masters.

A treason trial would mark the first time in Pakistan's history that a
military ruler has been held accountable, and the decision was cheered
by many who believe the country's overweening army needs to accept the
primacy of elected politicians.

The announcement by Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan's recently elected prime
minister, ended months of speculation over whether the government
would dare take on a former president and army chief who could face
the death penalty if found guilty of overturning the country's
constitution.

Only the government is able to try someone for treason, for which a
special court would have to be established.

Although Musharraf is currently under house arrest and has negligible
support in the country, many observers have long claimed the still
powerful military elite would never allow a civilian court to try one
of its former chiefs.

"Musharraf is still more popular in the army than [his successor
General Ashfaq Parvez] Kayani," said a lawyer, Chaudry Faisal Fareed.

He said Sharif risked "opening a Pandora's Box" if the trial expanded
to drag in other high-ranking officers.

Musharraf's actions amounted to high treason, Sharif told parliament
on Monday , promising that the former dictator had to "answer for all
his deeds in court".

"The prime minister is under oath to protect, preserve and defend the
constitution and it is implicit in his oath that his government
ensures that persons guilty of acts under Article 6 are brought to
justice," he said.
In a statement, Musharraf's spokesman said the Sharif government was
"demonstrating recklessness in its intention to pursue unwarranted
treason charges".

The statement said: "The people of Pakistan will not tolerate this
circus, which is primarily meant to create a diversion. It is taking
focus away from addressing serious challenges faced by the nation and
can result in unnecessary tension amongst the various pillars of state
and possibly destabilise the country."

The development adds to the legal troubles Musharraf has attracted
since his ill-judged decision to return from self-imposed exile in
March in the hope of running for election.

Apparently deluded about his popularity in Pakistan, which he said he
judged from his number of Facebook friends, he did not receive the
mass welcome he had hoped for.

Election officials snuffed out any hope that he might make a political
comeback when he was banned from standing in last May's election.

Private prosecutions were brought against him for his alleged role in
the assassination of the former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007,
the killing of a prominent tribal separatist leader in 2006 and the
detention of senior judges in 2007 during the tail end of his
presidency.

In the view of many lawyers, Musharraf is likely to be successful in
defending himself against those charges, but treason charges are "an
open and shut case", according to Fareed.

Talat Masood, a retired army officer, said a trial was inevitable
given that Musharraf had alienated two of the country's most powerful
men: Sharif, whom he toppled in a 1999 coup, and Iftikhar Muhammad
Chaudhry, the activist chief justice who was the object of the then
president's battle against senior judges in 2007.

"It's a gamble, no doubt about it," said Masood. "Sharif is taking a
certain element of risk because the fight against militancy is the
greatest challenge Pakistan faces right now and he needs the military
for that."
Some have already detected army meddling in the issue, including
Musharraf supporters' attack on lawyers outside a court hearing in
April.

In May, a senior lawyer involved in the investigations into Bhutto's
murder was shot dead as he drove to work in Islamabad.

Many assume that even if the trial does go ahead, a political deal
will be hatched to spare Musharraf's life, or even allow him to leave
the country to live out his days in exile.

One possible scenario might see the intervention of Saudi Arabia, one
of Pakistan's closest allies. Such an outcome would be rich in irony
given that Sharif was given exile in the kingdom after he Musharraf
deposed him.

Akhtar Hussain, a former vice-president of Pakistan's bar association,
said it was likely Musharraf would ultimately receive a presidential
pardon after a long legal process that is likely to stretch into 2014
and beyond.

Merely putting the former general on trial would mark an important
milestone for Pakistan, he said. "The key thing is the initiation of
the trial itself, which is very important for the standing of
democratic institutions in this country. The result, whether acquitted
or ultimately pardoned is a different matter."

U.S. justices to hear presidential appointments case

Posted on 8:05 AM by Unknown

U.S. justices to hear presidential appointments case
(Reuters) - The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear a closely
watched case involving the National Labor Relations Board that raises
fundamental questions about the authority of the U.S. president to
make appointments without Senate approval.

In the court's next term, starting in October, the court will consider
whether three appointments President Barack Obama made to the board in
January 2012 were invalid because the Senate was not technically in
recess at the time.

The case, which involves weighty constitutional issues that are the
constant subject of political battles between Congress and the White
House through different presidential administrations, addresses what
is known as "recess appointments."

That refers to when a president makes an appointment - while senators
are in recess - to a position otherwise requiring Senate approval,
often naming an appointee who would have had trouble winning Senate
confirmation.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled
in January that the appointments to the panel, which normally has five
members, were invalid.

The appeals court agreed with Noel Canning, the bottling company that
challenged Obama's move, in finding that the president did not have
the authority to make the appointments.

The U.S. Constitution allows the president to make appointments when
the Senate is in recess. Such appointments expire at the end of the
congressional session.

In Monday's brief order announcing it was hearing the case, the court
asked the parties to address an additional question on whether the
president can make recess appointments when the Senate convenes every
three days for so-called pro-forma sessions.

Backed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Noel Canning argued that an
NLRB ruling against it was invalid because of the appointments, which
meant the board lacked a quorum.

Obama made his NLRB appointments on January 4, 2012, when the Senate
was in session but not conducting business. The congressional session
began on January 3, according to the Senate website.

Presidents from both parties have used their recess appointment
authority to make appointments when the Senate is not conducting
business.

The appeals court ruling also raised questions about the validity of
Obama's appointment of Richard Cordray to run the Consumer Finance
Protection Board, which was made on the same day as the three NLRB
appointments.

The case is NLRB v. Canning, U.S. Supreme Court, No. 12-1281.

Nelson Mandela Remains in Critical Condition

Nelson Mandela Remains in Critical Condition
By DEVON MAYLIE And PATRICK MCGROARTY

PRETORIA—Nelson Mandela remained in critical condition on Monday, as
attention shifted to the Pretoria hospital where the 94-year-old
former president has convalesced for more than two weeks.

Mr. Mandela's declining health also has prompted many South Africans
to weigh his legacy against his African National Congress party's
track record for delivering on his vision for a nonracial society that
would pull disenfranchised blacks into the political and economic
mainstream.

The numbers of well-wishers and journalists from around the world
swelled again outside the gates of the private Mediclinic Heart
Hospital in South Africa's capital. Flowers and messages of support
piled up against a brick wall for Mr. Mandela, a sign of enduring
public affection for the ailing statesmen. Family and government
officials have shuttled in and out to see him since Mr. Mandela was
admitted on June 8.

Until Sunday, the government had been terming his condition "serious
but stable." Late Sunday night, the South African presidency said his
health had worsened over 24 hours and his condition had turned
"critical." Speaking to reporters Monday, President Jacob Zuma
wouldn't elaborate on Mr. Mandela's condition or the care he was
receiving.
"All of us as a country should accept that Madiba is old...as he ages,
his health will trouble him," Mr. Zuma said, referring to Mr. Mandela
by his clan name, as he's popularly known here. "When a person is
critical, they are critical," he said.

The hospital's location and cardiac specialty have raised questions
about why Mr. Mandela's doctors brought him there to treat what
officials initially described as a recurrence of a lung infection, one
of many he has battled since contracting tuberculosis during his 27
years in prison for opposing South Africa's former white-minority
regime.

The clinic is 30 miles north of Mr. Mandela's home in the Johannesburg
suburbs, much farther away than a nearby Johannesburg hospital where
he received treatment in the past.

The trip wasn't without complications. Mr. Zuma's office acknowledged
over the weekend that Mr. Mandela's ambulance broke down en route to
Pretoria on June 8, forcing doctors to move him to a second vehicle to
finish the 40-minute drive. But Mr. Zuma's spokesman, Mac Maharaj, has
refuted reports that Mr. Mandela went into cardiac arrest on his way
to the hospital. He also denied Mr. Mandela was stranded on the road
for 40 minutes, but didn't elaborate, citing doctor-patient
confidentiality.

Mr. Maharaj said Monday that Mr. Mandela's doctors are in charge of
making all decisions related to his health, including the hospitals at
which he receives treatment and how much information to disclose. Mr.
Mandela has been hospitalized four times since December.

Malcom Matsiko, a 35-year-old accountant who walked past the Pretoria
hospital on his way to work Monday, said he hoped the choice of
hospitals could increase prospects for Mr. Mandela's recovery. "I pray
they brought him because they can make him better here," said Mr.
Matsiko, wearing a tattered black cap bearing the logo of the ANC
party that Mr. Mandela led to power in 1994. "I pray that he will exit
and be with us for some time more."

Mr. Mandela's hospitalization has led many South Africans to reflect
upon the promise he represented when he became the country's first
black president and about whether the ANC and the government have been
able to deliver on the future he envisioned.

South Africa's official unemployment rate is over a quarter of the
workforce, and economic growth is expected to linger near 2% this
year, weighed down by labor unrest at mines and in other sectors.

"Before, there were black people, and they were poor. Now there are
rich black people and poor black people, and the gap in between is not
gone," said Yandi Sigenu, a 24-year-old business analyst in
Johannesburg. "The government worries about only itself and its own
kind."

Mr. Zuma acknowledged South Africa's economic strains on Monday, but
he blamed a prolonged global downturn for the domestic troubles. He
also took issue with critics who have accused his government of a
lackluster performance that hasn't improved upon apartheid-era
education, basic services and levels of employment.

Mr. Zuma said his ANC-led government has successfully brought
electricity and clean water to nearly all South Africans and vowed to
work with businesses to create jobs and "do a lot more to improve the
quality of the poor and working class."

Mr. Zuma added: "What we can say in terms of implementation, we have
not done what we would have wanted to do."

Samsung Announces Dates, Prices for Galaxy Tab 3

Posted on 8:03 AM by Unknown

Samsung Announces Dates, Prices for Galaxy Tab 3
Samsung today announced launch dates and prices for its Galaxy Tab 3
line of tablets, including the first Intel-powered Android tablet
available in the United States.
The Intel tablet, which is the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1-inch, will start at
$399. The smaller, 8-inch Galaxy Tab 3, which will use a Samsung
Exynos processor, will start at $299, while the budget, 7-inch Galaxy
Tab 3 with a Marvell processor will cost $199.
All three tablets will go on pre-sale on June 25 with actual sales
starting July 7, Samsung said. The models sold in the U.S. will be
Wi-Fi-only, with no cellular capability.
The Galaxy Tab 3s, which were announced globally between April 29 and
June 3, take many styling cues from the Galaxy S 4 smartphones. The
7-inch and 8-inch models, especially, look like expanded Galaxy S 4
devices. They all come in white or gold-brown, with a physical home
button below the screen, just like the Galaxy S 4 has.
The specs here vary a lot. The 7-inch, $199 model has a 1.2-GHz
dual-core Marvell processor, a 1,024-by-600 screen and Android 4.1.
There's a 3-megapixel camera on the back and a 1.3-megapixel camera on
the front. The device comes with only 8GB of storage, although there's
also a memory card slot. This is a basic tablet that competes with
gadgets like the Amazon Kindle Fire HD and the Kobo Arc. Its screen is
lower-resolution than either of those, but Samsung throws in some
exclusive content and features, such as three months of Hulu Plus and
two years of a 50GB Dropbox account.
Still, though, Samsung will have to rely on its name and build quality
to fend off lower-priced competitors like the Asus Memo Pad HD 7 and
Coby MID7065.
The 8-inch model steps up to Android 4.2 and uses a more mainstream
1.5-GHz Samsung Exynos dual-core processor. This unit has a
1,280-by-800 screen, a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel
front camera, along with 16GB of storage (of which only 11.26GB is
available, Samsung points out.) It's also only 7.4mm thick. At $299,
it's competing with Apple's $329 iPad mini and Amazon's $269 Kindle
Fire HD 8.9 (as well as some upcoming Toshiba tablets), offering a
more standard Android alternative.
It's the 10.1-inch tablet I'm most intrigued by, because of that Intel
processor. The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 uses a 1.6-GHz Intel Atom Z2560
"Clover Trail+" processor, and it'll be the first Intel Android device
released in the U.S. While we've seen Intel-based smartphones appear
in other countries, none of them have come here because of Intel's
lack of LTE support; with this Wi-Fi-only tablet, that isn't a
problem.
According to Intel, its processor will offer battery life advantages
over competing choices, while maintaining fast performance and
application compatibility. We'll have to see. The Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 is
only 7.9mm thick and packs a relatively healthy 6,800mAh battery, and
battery consumption will also be kept down by using a somewhat
disappointly low-res 1,280-by-800 screen.
Other stats include a 3-megapixel main camera, 1.3-megapixel front
camera, Android 4.2, 16GB of memory and a memory card slot.
Other than the Intel play, I'm a little underwhelmed here. At a $399
price point, it's obvious that the Tab 3 10.1 isn't going up against
flagships like the Asus Transformer Infinity or the latest iPad, but
I'm also concerned about the upcoming Asus Memo Pad FHD 10, which has
the same Intel chip and a higher-resolution screen at a potentially
lower price.
Samsung is doing its best to enhance the Galaxy Tab 3 experience with
exclusive software, of course. All the Tabs will have an IR blaster
with Samsung's WatchOn software, which functions as both a live TV
guide and a way to search streaming shows. They'll also support Group
Play, which lets several Samsung devices act as multiple speakers for
the same music or videos, as well as Wi-Fi Direct file transfer. (They
won't support S Beam, as they lack NFC.) A Samsung Apps showcase will
foreground apps designed for the tablets, which is especially
important on the 10.1-inch device because many Google Play apps aren't
optimized for that screen size.

George Zimmerman Trial Opening statements launch Monday

Posted on 7:40 AM by Unknown

George Zimmerman Trial Opening statements launch Monday
(CBS) SANFORD, Fla. - Opening statements are scheduled to start today
in the case of George Zimmerman, the former neighborhood watch
volunteer accused of murder in the shooting death of unarmed Florida
teen Trayvon Martin last year.

PICTURES: George Zimmerman in court

READ: Trayvon Martin Shooting: A timeline of events

The high-profile, racially-charged case has drawn the national and
international spotlight, and for six jurors and four alternates chosen
Thursday, sequestration began this weekend. The jurors will be allowed
limited contact with friends, family, and the outside world. However,
they will have monitored entertainment and won't be exposed to media
reports on the case for the duration of the trial.

Central to the case will be who started the deadly altercation the
night of Feb. 26, 2012, whether George Zimmerman was acting in
self-defense and whether his shooting of Martin was justifiable under
Florida law.

For prosecutors, experts say opening statements will likely center on
Zimmerman's alleged profiling of Trayvon Martin, 17, as he walked
through the Sanford, Fla. gated community that evening. They'll likely
seek to indicate to the jury that Zimmerman labeled Martin as an
intruder and a potential criminal in the community, and then
confronted him, said David LaBahn, president and CEO of the
Association of Prosecuting Attorneys.

"I think they've got a very solid case here - someone went and
confronted and killed an unarmed person, and did it in a mental state
of they were taking the law into their own hands," LaBahn said.

VIDEO: George Zimmerman trial: Self-defense, murder at case's core
In order to prove second-degree murder, prosecutors must prove beyond
a reasonable doubt that Martin's death was caused by Zimmerman's
alleged criminal action, and that the killing was committed with
ill-will or spite and showed an indifference to human life.

Prosecutors may point to a phone call Zimmerman placed to
non-emergency dispatchers the night of the deadly altercation in
attempting to prove Zimmerman was acting with ill will, LaBahn said.
As Zimmerman called the dispatchers to report a suspicious person,
Zimmerman said Martin "looks like he's up to no good or he's on drugs
or something" and later used the term "a**holes."

While prosecutors may allege Zimmerman labeled Martin as a criminal,
LaBahn said they likely won't argue he racially profiled Martin, who
was black, in an attempt to keep the facts "straightforward" for the
jury. Use of the term "racially profiled" in opening statements was
disallowed last week in a key ruling by Circuit Judge Debra Nelson,
although Nelson said that prosecutors won't be barred from using words
including "profiled," "wannabe cop" and "vigilante" - language the
defense argued could be inflammatory.

PICTURES: George Zimmerman Crime Scene Photos

"If I'm the state in this case, I want to make this case very simple -
it's not about Trayvon Martin or about George Zimmerman. Those two
names have a brand and they have an identity - this is a case about an
unarmed kid in the vicinity of George Zimmerman and he did absolutely
nothing to cause him to be in fear," said Brian Tannebaum, president
of the Florida Association of Bar Defense Lawyers and past president
of the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. "If I start
adding to it, then I start opening the door to other issues and I
start creating other emotions and other thoughts about racism."

Meanwhile, the defense in their opening statement will seek to
demonstrate that Zimmerman was acting in self-defense after he was
attacked by Martin, experts say. Florida's controversial "stand your
ground" statute means that a person isn't required to retreat first
when confronted by a threat, but can respond with deadly force if they
believe their life is in danger.

"You'll have his attorneys making the argument that Trayvon presented
a threat to him, and he didn't have to back down from the threat under
Florida law," said California criminal defense attorney Michael
Cardoza.

The defense may also point to evidence including photos of George
Zimmerman bleeding from the face after the altercation to bolster
their case, and may call Zimmerman to the stand to testify during the
trial, Tannebaum said.

In another key ruling, Nelson on Saturday said that prosecution audio
experts who said Trayvon Martin was screaming in the background of a
neighbor's 911 call moments before he was killed won't be allowed to
testify at trial.

The screams could be crucial pieces of evidence for the jury in
weighing who was the aggressor in the confrontation, but experts have
come to mixed conclusions about who was screaming in the background of
the call.

One state expert claimed that he heard Martin saying "I'm begging
you." Defense experts have said the quality of the tape was too poor
to determine who was screaming, and on Thursday, defense attorney Don
West said any attempt to analyze the call reliably would be a "fool's
errand."

Nelson ruled that the methods used by the state experts aren't
reliable, but her ruling doesn't prevent the 911 calls from being
played at trial, the Associated Press reports.

Attorneys initially anticipated the trial to last two to four weeks,
but the elimination of the audio experts will likely shorten the trial
by a week, according to the AP.

Snowden apparently did not board Havana flight, but may leave Moscow Tuesday

Posted on 7:36 AM by Unknown

Snowden apparently did not board Havana flight, but may leave Moscow Tuesday
By Kathy Lally, Anthony Faiola and Karen DeYoung,
MOSCOW — Edward Snowden, who was expected to fly to Havana from Moscow
Monday, did not board the flight, according to journalists on the
airplane and airport officials, lending yet another twist to a
convoluted flight from U.S. authorities.

Just where he was remained a mystery. His ultimate destination was
reported to be Ecuador, where he has asked for asylum. But at a press
conference in Hanoi Monday a few hours after the plane had left
Moscow, Ecuadoran Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said he could not
say where Snowden was.
"We are in close contact with the Russian government," he said, "but
the specific information as to his whereabouts, we cannot share that
at this time, we don't have it and we can't share it."

Patino said Ecuador was still considering Snowden's request for asylum
while also delivering what appeared to be an impassioned defense of
the former CIA contractor who has admitted leaking government secrets
about surveillance programs. Patino, whose government has been sharply
criticized for silencing journalists at home, insisted that Snowden's
case was fundamentally one based on the principle of human rights and
praised Snowden for disclosing a surveillance program that had
affected nations around the globe.

He cited U.S. refusals to extradite bankers convicted in crimes in
Ecuador, saying Quito was now free to exercise its "sovereignty" in
the same way. When asked if he was concerned about damaging his
nation's economic relationship with Washington, Patino remained
adamant.

"Ecuador puts its principles above its economic interests," he said.

Snowden's apparent failure to board the flight to Havana led to wide
speculation in Russian media, which suggested he had left by another
route, was taking Aeroflot's Tuesday flight to Hanoi instead or even
that he was being questioned by Russian intelligence, though there was
no evidence to support any theory.

Moscow itself has said little to say about Snowden's presence here.
Despite a direct request from the United States to return him to U.S.
soil to face charges of leaking government secrets, Russian officials
said Monday that they had no legal authority to detain the fugitive
former government contractor, who arrived in Moscow from Hong Kong on
Sunday and was seeking asylum in Ecuador, reportedly planning to
travel there by way of Havana.

A frustrated Secretary of State John F. Kerry said he was troubled by
the apparent refusal of fellow world powers China and Russia to
respond to espionage charges the United States had filed against
Snowden, who leaked top-secret documents about U.S. surveillance
programs.

"It is a very serious question for all of us in all our
relationships," Kerry said. "There is no small irony here," Kerry
added, posing the hypothetical question of whether Snowden sought
refuge in China and Russia "because they're such powerful bastions of
Internet freedom."

The flight to Havana was packed with journalists, who set off a
flutter of Tweets when the airplane door was closed.
